EstherKing1900

I have painted the other sketch for the human flight commander, Esther King. A Canadian war veteran, she’s now in charge of the Rapid Response Force, a WSO Unit in charge of Peacekeeping.

I haven’t been recording my paintings because I’ve been watching Space Battleship Yamato 2199 while I paint. It gets me a lot of inspiration and great ideas and totally recommend to scifi fans.

I’ve been thinking about the spaceship window dilemma and I noticed some interesting things about ships with windows. They allow the pilot to be seen from the outside, potentially showing his face. That in the case of this game wouldn’t make sense, because pilots will have a full helmet without glass parts, and that’s not up for debate. Another thing is that sunlight is allowed to enter the cockpit and can cast shadows. I noticed this in Elite Dangerous, rotating a ship and see the light shine on the cockpit is really an interesting and immersive feeling.

Other things about the nature of the main character are up for decision, but it’s something that will impact heavily about everything. Anyway, I want to star prototyping the game, Unreal 4.9 is looking really bloody solid and I can’t wait to put my hands on it again, but I also have tons of ideas for characters that I’d love to paint, so much fun to be had, so little time.

I’m also looking for work, commissions included.

Mythical Beauty

a privately commissioned series in 2013, depicting an all female cast of sensual mythical beings.

This piece is of the beings referred in the Bible as the Chayot. Ezekiel saw them as a composite of 4 beings, later called the tetramorph. Since most resources about the Chayot come from hebrew mysticism, I added some flavor in that direction

Apsaras. The Apsaras are beautiful supernatural spirits in the Hindu and Buddhist mythologies. Their natural element is the Air and are great dancers. They usually perform to the gods or seduce men (sometimes to disrupt their meditation) or take care of fallen heroes. Read the Wikipedia entry to get a better overview. What I find most interesting about the Apsaras is that you can see them sculpted everywhere in some Hindu temples, often with incredible details.

Tennyo. The Tennyo are beautiful spirits from the Japanese Buddhism mythology, they can be easily compared to the Western Angels or the Asian Apsaras. They usually carry around lots of long garments that give them the ability to fly.

Seraph. The second Commissioned artwork for this series. Had a lot of fun doing the design and painting on this one! I hope it can easily transmit the fanning of flames as I hear them. Literally “burning ones”, the word seraph is normally a synonym for serpents when used in the Hebrew Bible. A seminal passage in the Book of Isaiah (6.1-8) used the term to describe fiery six-winged beings that fly around God’s throne singing “holy, holy, holy”.

Dakini. Of all the beings I came across, the Dakini is probably one of the hardest to describe because they have their own versions in Tibetan Buddhism, Japanese Buddhism and Hinduism and they’re not exactly supernatural beings. Enlightened meditation practitioners can be called dakini, but Dakini is also a philosophical concept of the enlightened feminine form. “As the Western nun Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo comments, “Many lamas have said that women make superior practitioners because they are able to dive into meditation much more easily than males. This is because many males are afraid of dropping the intellect, especially monks who have been studying for a long time. To suddenly just let that go and be naked in the meditation experience is frightening for them, whereas women seem to be able to manage it naturally.” from http://www.dakinipower.com/what-is-a-dakini/

Cherub. The third piece of the Mythical Beauty series ending the jewish/christian myth part. The Cherubim (singular: Cherub) are a type of angel many times mentioned in the Bible. the first occurrence is when the Garden of Eden is closed to humans, Cherubim guard the Tree of Life with flaming swords. They are also somewhat present whenever God speaks.
